ABOUT
When I am painting, I look for the essential elements of my subject often working through a number of changes or studies before reaching a satisfactory conclusion. Ideas may begin by noticing the how light falls on familiar objects around me at home or enjoying the luminous colours of land and seascape in Cornwall where I live.
I make drawings and studies whenever I come across something that strikes me as unusual or interesting. Then I use my sketchbook notes of those particular shapes, colours and relationships to bring back certain memories of that moment. By contemplating and rediscovering through this process I begin the journey of making the painting.
Mary Ford lives in Cornwall (UK) where the spirit of place has always remained a life-long inspiration.
From 1973-76 she was tutored by William Scott RA (1913-1989) while a student as the Royal Academy Schools. Today her works are in a number of private collections in the UK and abroad as well as in the Tate Collection, London.
